Binding the books he read

Faraday learned science from the books he was paid to bind. A ticket to Humphry Davy's lectures — and the bound notes he sent Davy afterward — got him a bottle-washing job at the Royal Institution. From there: the electric motor, the generator, induction, field theory. All without algebra.

What he refused

He declined a knighthood, twice declined the Royal Society presidency, and refused to make poison gas for the Crown ('I can. I will not.'). What he accepted: giving Christmas Lectures for children, which continue to this day. Greatness, in his ledger, was service plus wonder.
